Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban is more than just a businessman and investor.
He is a serial entrepreneur.

Mark was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to a Jewish middle-class family. At the young age of 12, Mark began his first venture in the business world selling garbage bags door to door. Throughout high school, Mark spent his free time working as a bartender, a party promoter, and even a dance instructor. He left high school for his senior year and instead got an early start on college where he went from University of Pittsburgh to the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated in 1981 with a Bachelors in Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business.

After finishing college, Mark moved to Dallas, Texas where he started working as a bartender. This didn't last long, as he quickly moved on to becoming a salesperson for one of the first PC software retailers in the Dallas area. After being fired nearly a year later, Mark decided to start his own company which he named MicroSolutions. Mark grew the company for a few years and ultimately sold it to CompuServe for $6 million, leaving Mark with around $2 million after taxes. Mark was now a millionaire.

In 1995, Mark and his friend Todd Wagner started Audionet which eventually became Broadcast.com. By 1999, Broadcast.com had over 300 employees and over $13 million in revenue by mid-year. With great projections for the future, Yahoo acquired Broadcast.com that year for $5.9 billion in stock. Mark smartly diversified his wealth to stay as safe as possible from market crashes. At the same time though, he had a great time and bought himself a nice Gulfstream V jet to celebrate his success.

But Mark didn't stop there. Born to do business, Mark moved from one venture to the next. In January, 2000, Mark became the majority stake holder in the Dallas Mavericks, a stake which he purchased from Ross Perot Jr. for $285 million. After 11 long years, Mark finally brought the team to the championship and to victory in 2011. Along the way, Mark has had quite a bit of controversy as the team owner and has been fined almost $2 million for making numerous critical statements here and there.

Mark purchased the Landmark Theater chain in 2003 and also co-founded AXS TV, the first high-definition satellite television network. In 2010, Mark invested in a store-front analytics company called Motionloft, demonstrating his strong belief in the sensor industry. Mark now enjoys listening to Shark Tank pitches and investing in companies he believes in, and every once in a while sharing his thoughts on Blog Maverick, his personal weblog. He lives in Dallas with his wife and three kids, and is always busy managing his team and diversified portfolio.

  1. Very to the point people on Shark Tank. You want a product that will create a profit, and benefit people in some way. That is the bottom line. If your product will not help people, or profit them, what is the point of creating it.

  2. Mark Cuban, you a very greedy man. In tonight's episode you robbed two women of their business that they had put their heart and soul into for years, for a mere $100,000 each -- spare change for you. Shame on you! The least you can do is go back to these women and offer them each 10% royalty from their product for perpetuity. You will never miss it. And if you have any heart at all, you will feel a lot better about yourself for it.
